Gravel and Asphalt for the Catalunya Rally

The organisers of the Catalunya Rally have announced a mixed-surface opening day and a final day which includes two runs through a 26-mile stage.

The October 22-24 event, which is based in Salou, will start with an opening day comprising two stages which run on gravel and asphalt, and one completely loose surface test.

For the first time in the history of the modern era of the World Rally Championship, the teams are likely to start Friday with a car in gravel specification and finish it in asphalt trim.

The Saturday and Sunday stages are all asphalt. The pre-event shakedown has been moved closer to Salou and altered to reflect the split nature of the event. The 1.8-mile stage is now part-gravel and part-asphalt.

Clerk of the course Aman Barfull said: "We are and we want to continue being an asphalt rally, but we have included a mixed day. This new rally concept benefits the show, both for spectators and for the media. And it follows the guidelines of the FIA, requesting organisers to provide for novelties and to contribute in order to raise the interest in the WRC.

"The rally consists of eight stages run twice in three days, totalling 792 miles, of which 220 are competitive."

Sebastien Loeb Leads Catalunya Rally

SALOU, Spain — Five-time world champion Sebastien Loeb surged to the lead in the Rally of Catalunya on Saturday.

The French driver finished the day 1.5sec ahead of Citroen teammate and overnight leader Dani Sordo with Mikko Hirvonen, in a Ford, third at 48.5sec.

The race, which finishes Sunday, is the penultimate leg of the 2009 championship race, in which Finnish ace Hirvonen currently leads Loeb by only five points in the standings.

"I'm in the lead, but not by a lot," said Loeb. "The stage was difficult, but the main thing is we got through the day okay and with no punctures.

"I'm very happy to be in the lead but there's a long day still to come tomorrow. We'll see how we do."

Hirvonen admitted to feeling the pressure after Sordo and Loeb dominated from early in the day, and the Ford Focus driver could only lament losing time at key points on the course.

"Against Citroens on tarmac it looks like third is the only place I can take," joked Hirvonen.

"It's been a good day. But it's a bit like history repeating itself; on Friday in Spain we lose a lot, on Saturday we get closer. I couldn't do much more and there's still more to do for next year - both from me and the car. We're closer though - and that's good news."

The 2009 world championship concludes with the Rally of Britain, in Wales, in three weeks' time.

SALOU - CATALUNYA RALLY

For the first time in the modern history of the World Rally Championship, the shakedown stage of the Catalunya Rally will form part of the competitive route.
In previous years, the shakedown test - a short stage run a day ahead of the start to offer the teams a final check over the cars - has always been run away from the route.
But, following a suggestion to the FIA from Catalunya Rally organisers RACC, the Salou-based event will break new ground when it runs from October 1-4.
Shakedown in Spain will include the first 4.32km of the Riudecanyes stage, which runs competitively (in its 16km entirety) twice on the final day of the penultimate round of this year's WRC.
A spokesman from the RACC said: "Using part of the real stages for shakedown will be another contribution to the continuous cost-reduction battle."
The leading drivers all have to complete at least two runs at shakedown between their allotted time of 08:00 and 10:00 - but there is now likely to be an increased enthusiasm from the drivers to complete as many runs at shakedown as possible, using it as the chance to fine-tune pace notes.
